Anime has been growing in popularity in America for the past few years. Some people may attribute this to the rise of manga and its popularity in the early 2000s. However, anime didn’t really start picking up until 2009 when Funimation began streaming shows on their website.
Since the, the popularity of anime has continued to grow. The industry has seen a number of successes, such as Atack on Titan and Naruto, that have brought in new fans and propelled the medium to new heights. There now conventions all over the country that celebrate anime and manga, and the industry is only getting bigger.
One of the most popular anime, Demon Slayer, set a new precedent by using a movie to push the narrative forward. This strategic choice allows the fans to have some content while the production team puts together the new story arc and of course, makes big bucks off the profit generated from movie sales. Another popular anime, “My Hero Academia”, has followed this strategy but has not been having as much success with the actual content they put out; meaning the movies are not very good. Now that Jujutsu Kaisen is trying its hand at the strategy but what will the outcome be?
Jujusto Kaisen the Series
Jujutsu Kaisen is a sequel to Akutami’s original Metropolian Curse Technical School, serialized in Shueishas’s Jump GIGA from April to July 2017, later collected in a tankobon volume, as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, in December 2018. The story follows high school student school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of jujustu sorcerers in order to kill a powerful Curse named Ryomen Suk
So What is Jujutsu Kaisen 0 about?
In “Jujutsu Kaisen 0”, Yuta Okkotsu is a timid, 16-year-old, high-school student who is haunted by Rika Orimoto, the cursed spirit of his childhood friend who died six years ago because both of them promised to get married when they grow up. Whenever Yuta is bullied, Rika comes to his defense and violently assaults his attackers. In November 2016, Yuta meets Gojo, a jujusu sorcerer under whose guidance he joins the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School to learn how to control Rika.
Suguro Geto is an antagonist in both the Jujustu Kaisen series and its prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Jujutsu High. He was originally a student of Masamichi Yaga’s alongside Satoru Gojo amd Shoko leiri at Tokyo Jujusto High. His experiences as a jujusto sorcerr massacred over a hundred civilians in a single night. He was expelled from Jujutsu High and came to be known as the worst of all curse users.
Suguru’s intense hatred for anyone how cannot use jujutsu had led him to become of the most feared sorcerers. His goal is to release an army of one thousand curses on Tokyo and Kyoto in an attempt to remove all humans who aren’t curse users. Suguru is incredibly powerful and it’s going to ake Yuta and his new friends to stop Suguru’s plans.
Now that we know we’re dealing with can dive into how good or bad the movie Jujustu Kaisen 0 is.Does this film live up to the loft expections of the anime; let’s explore the film and find out!
Top-notch production from the art to the choreography is a staple of the hit series and that caries over to to film. the excellence is apparent from the first moments of the first scene. Beautiful colors and. textures pop of the screen right away. One of the things most fans came to see is Gojo and his amazing eyes. Every time he takes of the blindfold the fans are graced with animation perfection.
When the battles heat up and the missions progressively become more dangerous the film does not disappoint. The stakes are high but through each battle, we get to learn so much about all the characters and their motivations. Watching characters that we see in the series grow during combat is one of the best parts of the film because we know who they will become.
One part that will always be amazing about Jujutsu Kaisen is the simplicity of attacks mixed with the amount of devastation. When Gojo unleashes attacks on his enemies there is a calm before the devastation that follows and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 introduced its fans to another character that has that same ability leaving us all waiting for the arrival of this character during the series.
There is not much negative that can be said about this movie. If there is an issue it would be the smallest of issues but Suguro Geto was not the man until he got busy with the action. It feels like Geto’s motives were generic. Not in the context of the show but culturally.
Where Have I Seen This Before?
The idea that someone finds another part of humanity lesser than and thinks they should all be eradicated is being done; it kind of sounds like a Harry Potter movie where the main antagonist only wants a certain group of people to be eradicated. It is a small thing but we try to have a balance within our reviews.
If I’m Being Honest, Jujutsu Kaisen gets a bonfire. The anime series is already at a very high level in terms of the quality of the animation, and the choreography of the characters. The movie brings in deeper story elements that will be sure to tie into the series. If you have read the manga then you know how this turns out but there are no spoilers here.
