In a world where high society meets high fashion, the Gucci family sits at the pinnacle! When Patrizia Reggiani falls for Maurizio Gucci and marries into the Gucci family she finds out if she is cut out for the high life. The legend ,Ridley Scott, helms this story that is based on true events and he pulled together an all-star cast to bring this story of true events back to life! “House of Gucci” has all the pieces to be a great movie but was Ridley Scott able to put it together? A spoiler free, honest review will fill you in on whether “House of Gucci” is worth watching!
Fun Facts- House of Gucci is full of interesting characters, the most interesting, Paolo Gucci, played by Jared Leto! He goes all in on the character and steals the show from a cast that includes: Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Selma Hayek, Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino! Jared Leto should be considered for best supporting actor at the Oscars for his over the top performance and Lady Gaga as Patrizia Gucci brings an undeniable energy to the film. She is not perfect but she does a great job of bringing you into her world and when it’s time to feel for her character, Gaga has put in the work to get you there with her!
Hard Truth- This movie has so many problems, the biggest of which is that the movie is based on a true story and they seemed to go with very little of the true story. Ridley Scott had a lot of real life material to pull from and maybe it was too much. This was a tale of two movies that came together like peanut and hot sauce. This movie starts off as a love story and then pivots hard into a very bad version of the HBO version of the hit show “Succession”. Characters change without any motivation due to poor scene transitions and the attempt at Italian accents from everyone involved in the movie were so terrible that I don’t believe they have ever eaten a plate of spaghetti let alone been to Italy.
Truth Bomb-If I’m Being Honest, “House of Gucci” gets a spark from me. To be clear, this is not a well written or executed movie but some of the performances I’ll never forget. Most will probably rate this movie much lower and deservedly so but for me, the experience I had in the theater with these characters show me there is a pulse, even if it’s weak. After learning this is based off of a true story, what we got on the screen is far more disappointing. If it were not for Jared Leto and to a lesser degree Lady Gaga this movie would have been incredibly hard to watch. Notice, I didn’t mention Adam Driver throughout this review, that would be because he did not do much in this movie and that’s a shame. House of Gucci will not be a movie most loved but I happened to have a decent time.
