In a world where the ghostbusters have been out of action for 30 years a new team with a legacy to uphold is called into action to defeat an enemy from the past! Ghostbusters brings the legacy full circle as director Jason Reitman takes the helm to complete the narrative ark his father Ivan Reitman started back in 1984 with the classic “Ghostbusters” movie. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a new younger team with connections to the past has to defeat Gozer the Gozerian again before the ancient evil entity covers the earth with pure evil! A quick, spoiler free review will help you decide whether Ghostbusters: Afterlife should be resurrected or left to Rest in Peace!
Fun Facts: The director Jason Reitman understood the best way to get the fans in the seats to deliver old feelings with a fresh crew. The iconic sounds of proton packs charging up or the blaring sirens of the ecto 1 never get old. The new cast of young stars are good for the most but McKenna Grace as the young genius Phoebe and her side kick “Podcast “ played by Logan Kim are fantastic. They are great fun to go on ghost hunting adventures with!
Hard Truth: Ghostbusters Afterlife has a couple of problems. The first being the story makes it hard to believe most of the people involved, except for Phoebe, are equipped to save the world from the paranormal threat that plagues their town and potentially the world. Another big issue that this movie has is the cast. It’s not a bad cast but a pointless one. J.K. Simmons, Bokkeem Woodbine and Olivia Wilde are not afforded the opportunity to do anything with the roles in which they had been cast. I’m never mad at someone getting a check but those roles could have been given to anyone. Speaking of roles, the biggest disappointment, Finn Wolfhard, of the hit Netflix show, “Stranger Things” is not given very much to do in this movie either.
Truth Bomb: If Im Being Honest, Ghostbusters: Afterlife gets a spark on the “Honest rating System”. This movie is full of nostalgia that will keep fans of the old films content! As far as the story that was told it falls short leaving me wishing this movie had more to give from what we watched. With some of the casting that was done there were too many missed opportunities for greatness. In the end I would like to see another iteration of ghostbusters but I’m not sold on “Afterlife” being the foundation for ghostbusters of a new generation.
